SSDI is a program administered by the Social Security Administration helping people who are disabled and unable to work. The program pays benefits to a disabled person who has a work record of paying Social Security taxes on money earned from employment or self-employment. SSDI should not be confused with SSI, an SSA disability program paying benefits to disabled adults and children with limited income and financial resources.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a disability program of the SSA that provides income supplements to adults and children who are blind or otherwise disabled and have limited income and other financial resources making it difficult for them to pay for food, clothing and shelter. Unlike SSDI, which requires a work history to qualify for benefits, a person need not have a work record to for SSI.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers benefits to veterans disabled during or as a result of service in the U.S. military.
